(CNN) – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Friday approved emergency use of Pfizer’s Govt-19 vaccine for children 5 to 11 years of age. This is the first vaccine against Govt-19 approved for minors in the country.
On Tuesday, FDA vaccination advisers voted 17-0, not voting once, recommending emergency use of the vaccine, which makes up one-third of all vaccines given to people 12 years of age or older.
Pfizer says a clinical trial shows that the vaccine provides more than 90% protection against symptomatic disease in children, even in a third of the drug, and the company hopes that this lower dose will reduce the risk of any side effects.
The issue now goes to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States. The CDC’s Immunization Advisors Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices will meet on November 2 to discuss the use of the vaccine among American children. After that, CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky will make the final decision on its use.
The White House says there is already a plan to distribute vaccines to younger children.
So far, the Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine has been licensed for children 12-15 years of age. In addition, the vaccine is recommended for people 16 years of age and older.
