The Cardinals emerge as favorites to keep Juan Soto

According to MLB Network analysts Jon Heyman and Joel Sherman in an article for the New York Post, the Cardinals are being viewed by rival teams’ managers as an option to keep Dominican Juan Jose Soto before the trade deadline. August 2.

Heyman and Sherman wrote that Soto shareholders have already been told that the Nationals are currently focusing on only one or two teams. St. Louis is believed to be one of those novenas.

The Cardinals have a solid farm system and several good young players at the major league level. Washington announced that they would be looking for four or five players in exchange for Soto, and that they wanted a mix of prospects and players with more time in the major leagues.

St. Louis is battling the Brewers for the NL Central and already has two MVP candidates in its lineup: Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado. However, for a lineup with plenty of righties, putting Soto between Goldschmidt and Arenado would raise the balance of the division.

The Post also reports that because they have enough prospects and young players to convince Washington, the Cardinals won’t have to absorb the big contracts — most notably left-hander Patrick Corbin — trying to get off their payroll.
