Surfer dies after lightning strike

(CNN Espasol) – Family and friends bid farewell to the remains of El Salvador surfing team member Katherine Diaz Hernandez this Sunday.

In a caravan of vehicles, family and friends moved the coffin from the Church of God Manontiels de Vita Ederna on El Tango Beach to the public cemetery of El Puerto de la Liberto. “My dear daughter-in-law is already with God,” Dias’ uncle Adelmo Rivas wrote on his Facebook account.

The National Sports Institute (INDS) has confirmed that a 22-year-old man died Friday in a lightning strike off the coast of El Dunco, 38 kilometers southwest of San Salvador.

“Great loss to our game. Our solidarity with the Surf family. I am with them in their pain, ”said Yamil Bukel, INDES President and Respect for Advertising.

The young woman trained for the World Surfing Games to be held from May 29 to June 6 in El Salvador, a qualifying competition to select the last 12 places for the Tokyo Olympics.

“Katherine represented the joy and energy that makes surfing so special and loved by all of us. She was the global ambassador for this sport,” the International Surfing Association, ISA wrote on its Twitter account, for its summary in English.

Emotional tribute

As can be seen in the video posted by Dominic Barona on his social networks, a group of surfers in Ecuador held an emotional ceremony in front of the beach to pay tribute to Diaz.

Surfers drew a heart in the sand and placed a photo of Diaz on top of the flowers, which created a surfboard. “Dear sister in our hearts forever. I keep everything beautiful, laughter, surfing, your energy and your heart is so pure. Now you will continue to shine from the sky, ”wrote Ecuadorian surfer Barona.

In the video the surfers build a respectable fence with their boards and then enter the sea. “I hope you are surfing the best waves in paradise,” Barona says in her post.
