POM Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold – DVD Review

The Greatest Movie Ever Sold

We’ve been looking for a sales representative at RockStar Weekly for a little while, but now that we’ve seen POM Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, we want the film’s director and star Morgan Spurlock (also from Super Size Me) to be our salesman. The always humourous, social commentator could sell ocean-front property in the middle of Saskatchewan to a Newfie with a dory. And he does it time and time again with style, class and humility.

The film explores the world of product placement, marketing and advertising and was fully financed by product placement, which has been integrated into the picture. In this funny and eye-opening documentary, viewers follow Spurlock as he signs up sponsors to let him pitch their products as "The Greatest," while still maintaining complete control over his original creative vision.

I would never consider mentioning sponsor names in a review, but this film is unlike any other. It’s about blatant product placement.  Participating companies include POM Wonderful, Amy's Kitchen, The Aruba Tourism Authority, Ban, Carrera Sunglasses, Get It For Free Online, Hyatt, JetBlue, KDF Car Wraps, Merrell, Mini, Solstice Sunglass Boutique, Trident, Carmex, Movietickets.com, Old Navy, Ted Baker, Petland Discounts, Seventh Generation Inc., Sheetz, Thayers and Mane 'n Tail, who are featured heavily in the film, but did not agree to sponsor it.

For years documentaries are not supposed to be entertaining, but Spurlock has found a way to make them that way. The Greatest Movie Ever Sold is pure entertainment in every definition of the word. It’s smart, witty and downright educational. Another rather odd side-effect is the inspiration that Spurlock generates. If your mind isn’t telling you to go out and sell a sponsorship after watching this movie, then there’s not much that will get you out of that comfy chair in front of the TV.

If you’re looking for a break from action, sci-fi, drama, foreign films, horror, animation, silly comedies or anything else I might have missed in this rather long description of movie styles, POM Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold is the perfect solution to a fresh viewing experience.
