NetflixThe legendary “cultural group”, which over the years has captured the importance of the Magna Carta in tech and business circles, has received some updates that reflect flow Giant current conditions.
The document, which is based on a PowerPoint suite created by the co-founder and co-CEO Red HastingsGuidelines that guide employee priorities and the company’s overall approach. It has been publicly published for years, reviewed at various intervals, and viewed more than 20 million times. Its section titles (“Too Aligned, Too Unrelated,” “Disapprove then Stick”) reflect some uniquely articulated corners of the company’s culture. Hastings detailed many of those principles in his 2020 book, There are no rules rules.
In a section called “Government,” a new point is made in the imperative: “You spend our members’ money wisely.” At the current level of $20 billion in 2022, Netflix’s Content Spending It is under intense scrutiny after the company reported its first subscriber drop in more than a decade in the first quarter and flagged further losses in the current quarter. More than two-thirds of its market value has vanished in the past six months. While the company is unlikely to drastically reduce its spending, management has signaled a new commitment to cutting fat, and some offerings and employees have already been cut as the process begins.
Another newly updated section, “Artistic Expression”, indirectly refers to recent controversies over titles such as Cuties request or Dave ChappelleComedy Special the closest. The latter, released last fall, caused a backlash and widespread outrage from staff angry over Chappelle’s accusations against transgender people. Netflix has resisted calls to cancel the special service.
“Entertaining the world is a great opportunity and also a challenge because viewers have very different tastes and perspectives,” the department says. The document adds that ratings, content warnings, and parental controls are all tools meant to help subscribers avoid content that might annoy them.
“Not everyone will like—or agree with—everything on our service,” “While every title is different, we approach it based on the same set of principles: We support the artistic expression of the creators we choose to work with; we program for a variety of audiences and tastes; Deciding what is right for them, versus Netflix censoring specific artists or voices.”
diverse I first reported that the document had been updated.
