Heart: Night at Sky Church – DVD Review

Vancouver-born/Seattle-raised rockers Heart have a musical story that dates back to their first album Dreamboat Annie for Mushroom Records in 1975 and has continued through to the release of a new live DVD Night at Sky Church. The band is on the road in the midst of a concert tour across Canada this month.

Filmed in high definition at Seattle’s spectacular Sky Church venue in early 2010, this brand new release – which is out now – sees Heart performing some of their classic hits plus tracks from their first new studio album in six years, Red Velvet Car. For this concert, the band is joined by special guest Alison Krauss on three tracks, with fiddle and guitar player (and Grammy Award-winning Canadian producer) Ben Mink also guesting.

The show takes on a very earthy tone, with plenty of Nancy Wilson’s acoustic guitar, giving several of the timeless hits a new sound. The never failing voice of sister Ann Wilson is as strong as ever and the addition of Krauss gives the show an almost country feel.

Containing quite a few tracks from Red Velvet Car, the DVD sounds more like new Heart rather than the band that recorded all the hits. Barracuda opens the show and there are a couple more moments in WTF and Magic Man, but the rock fury ends there as songs like What About Love, Alone, Crazy On You and These Dreams take on a new life in toned-down organic tracks.

The set is beautiful and the musicianship top shelf as Heart re-introduces itself to the world through familiar songs and glorious melodies.

I might have preferred a collection of all the Heart hits live rather than all that material from Red Velvet Car, but somehow the whole thing meshes together really well and sums up a fantastic evening with the Wilson sisters and their friends.
