Elf: Ultimate Collector’s Edition – Blu-Ray Review

Elf was a fantastic Christmas movie from Will Farrell, one of the few Saturday Night Live alumni that continues to draw box office numbers. It’s a movie that comedy fans and Christmas buffs have looked forward to PVRing each holiday season for the past couple years if a television network chose to air it. Well, PVR no more! The new Elf Ultimate Collector’s Edition not only brings the movie to life again on Blu Ray and DVD, it also includes a bunch of seasonal treats inside a colourful tin box.

This hilarious Christmas film tells the tale of a young orphan baby who mistakenly crawls into Santa’s bag of gifts and was taken to the North Pole. Raised by Papa Elf (Bob Newhart), Buddy (Will Ferrell) comes to realize he doesn’t fit in with the other elves. Determined to fin d a place where he belongs, Buddy searches for his real dad – in New York City!

The 2003 film comes to life in Bluray in an eye popping vibrant presentation as part of the Elf Ultimate Collector’s Edition. The clarity shows the colours really well, but what seemed rather interesting is that the movie took on a more cartoon look in its Blu Ray presentation – actually making it even more enjoyable. The cartoon feel was clear and true as Buddy talked with Leon the Snowman and ventured into the candy cane forest. Some of the cartoon feel disappeared as the movie shifted to New York, but Farrell took over at that point anyway.

The movie is pure family entertainment at its best. Farrell’s comedy can be a bit much for some, but Buddy seems to be a good extension of his comedic genious and lends well to his mistaken adventures and crafty one liners. It also helps hat Buddy keeps his pants on (although bright yellow tights in HD might make up for that).

Loaded with a ton of Blu Ray extras, a magnetic frame, gift tags, Elf tree ornament and 14” stocking, the Elf Ultimate Collector’s Edition is a great holiday treat and could be a fun family get together. This collection scores a ginormous thumbs up.
