The blue gingham dress worn by Judy Garland as Dorothy in the classic 1939 film “The Wizard of Oz” is auctioned off to raise funds for the Benjamin T. Roma School of Music, Drama and the Arts at Catholic University of America in Washington, DC.
It was gifted in the 1970s to the university’s then head of drama, Reverend Gilbert Hartke, by actress Mercedes Cambridge, a contemporary of Garland, the university said.
The auction house said the “missing” dress is particularly unique in that it retains the white under-the-sink blouse – one of only two Garland outfits to keep that feature. Bonhams said it was worn by Garland during the scene when Dorothy encounters the Wicked Witch of the West at Witch’s Castle.
