Benedict Cumberbatch He appeared tonight for the second time as host of SNLreferring to his opening monologue to his new film Doctor Strange in a multiverse of madnesswhich hit theaters in the United States on Friday.
“I am happy to be back in hosting Saturday Night Live. It’s been a really great and fun week. I have to be honest, because this week most of the graphics writers pitched me sketches every single day, and most of them were about Dr. GharibCumberbatch said up to the top. “He’s cool. I like the guy. I like playing the character. The movie is doing really well – but I’m You have I was in other movies.”
Cumberbatch joked that he went so far as to express it SNLLorne Michaels, with Michaels replying, “Like what?”
‘I said, ‘Okay,’ dog powerFor example, he said, “No one saw him.” I said: Come on, man. I was nominated for an Oscar for that. The host remembers. “I mean, I didn’t win. I was defeated will Smith…no, not physically. “
After referring to the infamous Oscar slap, Cumberbatch focused on discussing his excitement at being able to host SNLMother’s Day Show. “Of course, I would like to wish my mother a very happy Mother’s Day,” he said. “She’s actually on vacation in Greece right now and SNL I offered to fly her here first class, and she said, ‘No, I’m on a beach in Greece. Are you crazy?’
Cumberbatch then told his mother that he loved her, noting that when he was younger, he and his mother had “these strange and funny names” they used to call each other. “I called her ‘Bucky’,” he said, ‘and she called me ‘Benedict Cumberbatch.’
Later, he joked, “I went to a boarding school outside London – you’ve probably heard of it – called Hogwarts.”
While he was there, his mother would write him “these wonderful letters,” filled with beautiful illustrations. Cumberbatch noted, “I can’t do that for her here, but I thought I’d use a little of this monologue to thank her for all she’s done for me.”
When passionate piano music began to be played, Cumberbatch moved to address his mother directly. “Mother. I, your son—Little Benedict,” said he. “Thank you for always being by my side.”
Cumberbatch shared that when he grew up, whenever he faced a problem, his mother had a solution. “For example, when I lost my two front teeth, I was worried about harassment but you said, ‘It’s okay. Just try and smile without opening your mouth. “It’s great advice, but it also explains why to this day, in every photo on the red carpet, I smile like that.”
Cut to a Cumberbatch picture where his smile is akin to a strange grimace.
“Seriously with my mom,” he said, “thank you.” “You have shown me so much love and support, every step of the way. I love you Bucky.”
She also got a shout out tonight, Cumberbatch’s wife Sophie, who was among the audience on the show. “I am seriously in constant and constant awe of you. I mean, first of all, you have given birth to our three beautiful boys, and that alone is a little miracle, as any woman will tell you.” “Meanwhile, according to you, I was dressing up as a wizard–though technically a wizard.”
After explaining that wizards have robes – unlike his Marvel character Doctor Strange, who has a cloak – he went on to say that he hopes when his wife really thinks about it, she’ll realize that their contributions as parents are equal. “Because if you think being a mother is hard, try to do it,” he said with a fist of his wrist. “Yes, I just opened a gate. You’re most welcome.”
