Actress Louise Fletcher dies at 88


Louise Fletcher, the actress who won an Academy Award for her role as the villainous nurse Ratched “Someone Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” She died Friday in France, according to her agent David Shaul. She was 88 years old.

Shaul said Fletcher died of “natural causes,” without providing further details. She was surrounded by family in their home in Montdauraus.

Shaul, who said he has worked with Fletcher over the past few decades, said she lived on a 300-year-old converted ranch there and also has residence in Los Angeles.

In her Oscar speech, Fletcher kindly thanked her “Cuckoo’s Nest” castmates and then, using sign language, admitted that her deaf parents watched at home.

“I want to thank you for teaching me to dream. You see my dream come true,” she told them.

The film won Best Five Oscars in 1975 – for Best Picture, Director Milos Forman, Adapted Screenplay, Actor Nicholson and Actress Fletcher.

Her role became one of the greatest villains in movie history, and she ranked fifth on the list compiled by the American Film Institute, behind the likes of Hannibal Lecter and The Wicked Witch of the West.

In 2020, the role of Fletcher was the inspiration for Ryan Murphy’s TV series “Ratched”.

Fletcher also played an ongoing role in the series “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” and played Helen Rosmond in the 1999 film “Cruel Intentions” among many other film and television credits. She recently appeared in the Netflix comedy series “Girl Boss” and in the series “Shameless”.

Fletcher is survived by her two sons, John and Andrew Peck. her sister Roberta Ray; and granddaughter. Fletcher married Jerry Beck in 1959 and the couple divorced in 1977.
